Located directly on the border of Piedmont and the Valle d’Aosta, Carema is a striking area with terraced vineyards planted precariously on the steep hillsides of the Alps. It’s a tiny appellation of micro vineyards, each with as little as a few rows of vines. The Produttori di Carema co-op was created in 1960 to allow the village’s farmers to maintain their vineyards (a hobby for most) and sell their grapes at the end of the year. Nebbiolo grown in Carema, known here as Picotener, comes across in its lightest, most ethereal, Burgundian style you’ll experience. Cranberry and pomegranate are accented by subtle notes of orange peel, dried herbs, and fresh mint.
