Paolo Scavino is a fourth generation estate in Castiglione Falletto, run by sisters Elisa and Enrica Scavino. The family has acquired plots in many of Barolo’s top terroirs, but none is more closely linked to the family than Fiasco vineyard (‘Bric del Fiasc’ is Piedmontese dialect for the top of that hill). First bottled as a single cru in 1978, it is routinely the estate’s most complex wine, with red fruit, licorice, and balsamic and mineral undertones. 2008s are appreciated by lovers of classic Barolo thanks to a cool growing season that yielded wines of balance and understated fruit. Now entering its prime at 15+ years old, the wine has very fine tannins and shows supreme elegance. It’s a masterpiece with a long life ahead of it.
