Teliani Valley ‘Glekhuri’ Rkatsiteli Amber 2019
Region: Kakheti, Georgia
Winemaker: Temuri Dakishvili
Drinks Best: Now - 4 Years
Georgia is the birthplace of amber wine, also commonly known as orange wine. For centuries Georgians have been skin fermenting and aging indigenous grapes in traditional qvervi - large clay vessels buried underground. Teliani Valley's ‘Glekhuri’ is made from Rkatsiteli - a native grape from the eastern part of Georgia. Macerated on the skins for 14 days and then aged in stainless steel for another 6 months, this is an elegant and serious amber wine that is a perfect introduction to the style. The color is a golden-orange with a silky, round texture. Perfumed with notes of sweet spices, dried apricots, and white flowers, the palate is rich and structured while remaining dry and refreshing with notes of sage, bruised melon, and honey. This is perfect to pair with charcuterie or even your favorite style of curry.
Classic beef tartare with an egg yolk, cornichons, flake salt, and crispy toast points
What do I like to drink?
I've been very into Sicily, Portugal, and Spain recently. All I know is in this sweltering NC heat - it’s got to be cold! I love a fuller bodied rosé, a clean, crisp pet-nat, or a mineral-driven white. I don’t always enjoy wine with food so I appreciate versatile wines that drink nicely on their own or along with food.
