After 15 years visiting Piedmont, German businessman Dieter Heuskel’s love for its wines led him to create Le Pianelle in 2002. At the winemaking helm is star consultant Cristiano Garella, inarguably the most important voice in Alto Piemonte today. Le Pianelle’s Bramaterra has emerged as a benchmark wine within the DOC. The volcanic red soils come through in the form of iron and baked cherry flavors courtesy of the Nebbiolo that makes up the bulk of the wine. Dark plum and black pepper accents are contributed by blending grapes Croatina and Vespolina, respectively. The wine is medium-bodied, with silky tannins that bely its ability to age. two decades or more.
