The term “Jolie-Laide” originates in France, and loosely translates into “unconventionally beautiful.” That’s precisely what winemaker Scott Schultz is going for with his wines – sourced from grapes and places that are unconventional for California, and crafting wines of beauty. Scott built relationships with the local wine industry while managing the wine list at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon. Only 120 cases of this natively German/Austrian grape was made - and it’s the first we have seen domestically! This cuvée saw all of the fermentation vessels: concrete eggs, stainless steel, and neutral oak barrels. A naturally very expressive grape, this wine boasts aromatics of green apple, green pear, honeysuckle, and lemon curd. She is crisp, dry, and a delicious outlier in domestic wine.
