While it’s impossible to trace the beginning of the ‘natural wine’ movement to any one producer, there can be little debate that Jean Foillard, along with three of his friends and colleagues in Beaujolais, were absolutely pioneers and paragons of the movement. Though he lives and makes the bulk of wines from Morgon fruit, he expanded his operation by parcels in the nearby cru of Fleurie in the early 2000s. This area is known for more sand in their granite based soils which magnify the natural aromatics of the Gamay grape. Dried rose petal florality on the nose leads to red currant and concentrated raspberry fruit on the palate bounded by firm structure.
