In Burgundy, perhaps more than anywhere else in the modern winemaking world, the devil truly is in the details, and few are better with the details than Jean-Marie Fourrier. Jean-Marie took over the family business in 1994 after having learned at the hand of the legendary Henri Jayer, who he credits with his winemaking mantra – the philosophy of doing nothing. This is an overly humble concept, to be sure, but one you can afford when you have access to some of the finest Pinot Noir vineyards in the world, a four-generation book of ancestral knowledge to pull from, and world class training, all of which Domaine Fourrier has in abundance. The result is some of the most iconic wines from the Gevrey-Chambertin region, and a name that commands respect worldwide. Minimal oak is used in keeping with the minimalist approach, and the wines have come to be synonymous with the power, transparency, grace, and structure for which Gevrey-Chambertin is known, and that captivates Pinot Noir drinkers lucky enough to find them. The 2017 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru displays layers of complexity while remaining balanced from start to finish. Boysenberry, fig, crushed strawberry and touches of graphite mingle in the glass while the palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit with a dark, structured finish.
