“Terre rouge” means “red earth,” which perfectly describes the granite and volcanic-based red soils of the Sierra Foothills. Winemaker Bill Easton decided to produce the major grape varieties of the Rhone Valley of France--Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre--which thrive in the hot climate of California. “Garrigue” is a common descriptor of Rhone reds, referring to the heady scent of the mix of herbs and shrubs found in the wild scrublands of the Rhone. Easton’s Garrigue is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It is balanced and elegant, with complexity gained as the wine develops in the bottle. It exudes bold flavors of earth and smoke, thyme, black pepper and firm tannins.
