Few names in Italian wine culture can be mentioned in the same breath as Giacomo Conterno. Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Biondi Santi; it’s an elite list of producers that can contend for the title of ‘best wine in Italy.’ The Conterno estate, now in the skilled hands of third-generation winemaker Roberto Conterno, gets our vote for the top spot and is well-known for their limited production, highly allocated Barolo’s.

It is rare that Conterno makes a new wine or chooses to expand their vineyard holdings, but the opportunity to purchase land in the famed Cerretta vineyard in 2009 was too much to pass up and represented the second time in 100 years Conterno had purchased vineyards. The 2016 is an incredibly elegant wine and a perfect example of how finessed young Barolo can be when so
much care and intention is put into the winemaking process. Silky tannins envelop a core of bright red berry fruit, spice, and floral notes with a bold finish.

Pairings: Braised short rib & root vegetables with parmesan polenta
