The Saenz de Samanegio family has been crafting wines in Rioja Alavesa for generations and, like most wineries in Rioja, they are best known for their red wines. They also make a small amount of excellent white wine that comes from the family’s 60- to 70-year-old Viura and Malvasia vines that are planted on chalk and clay soils. In contrast to the oaky, oxidative style of old-school white Rioja, Ostatu crafts their wine in a more modern style, in which the fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve the clean and bright flavors of fresh herb, white peach and lemon that complement the crisp acidity and honeydew finish.
