Region: Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara, California Grape(s): Chardonnay Winemaker: Dieter Cronje Drinks Best: Now - 2 years
Winemaker Dieter Cronje grew up just outside of Cape Town, South Africa where he fostered a love affair for wine. After travelling through Burgundy, Champagne, and finally Santa Maria Valley, he settled at Presqu’ile to hone his craft of producing fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from this unique California region. Unlike most of Southern California, the valley is ideal for cooler climate varietals sandwiched between the only transverse mountain ranges on the West Coast, funneling cold air from the ocean to the vineyards. For his Chardonnay, a touch of cream and a touch of oak are fulfilling, yet balanced. Green apple acidity is lively but the finish is smooth and filled with notes of buttercream.
Pairing: Smoked Bluefish pâté on garlic and herb toast
