Azelia is in the heart of Barolo and is run by father and son team Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino, the 4th and 5th generations to helm the estate. Azelia produces wines from some of the most respected and renowned vineyards in Barolo, yet they remain somewhat under the radar. The grapes for this wine come from the estate’s youngest vines in their Barolo vineyards. While many producers’ Langhe Nebbiolo is made to resemble a slight version of their Barolo, Azelia’s is decidedly different. It is fermented and aged in stainless steel to show off Nebbiolo’s fruity side, with red cherry, raspberry, violets, and red licorice. Nebbiolo’s fresh acidity is on display, but its (usually intense) tannins are quite tame here.
