In a region of the wine making world where following the rules and being conservative is nearly a requirement of owning land, Jean-Paul Brun is a rebel. He’s spent his career insisting that Beaujolais can, and should, make great wine. In 2007, nearly all of his wines were rejected from the Beaujolais AOP for being “too atypical.” Luckily for us, Jean Paul persisted and kept on making exceptional wine. ‘L’Ancien’ features an aromatic nose of lilac, strawberry, and bright cherry. The high-toned red fruit is followed by a ripe plum palate and pleasing minerality. The wine sees no oak, letting the ripe fruit and gentle acidity speak for itself.
