Timorasso has emerged over the past decade as one of Piedmont’s best contenders for a serious, ageworthy white to sit alongside the region’s famous reds. The re-emergence of this variety is thanks entirely to one person, Walter Massa, who saved it from going extinct in the 1990s. Since then it has been adopted by his fellow winemakers in Colli Tortonesi, along with several high-profile producers of Barolo and Barbaresco. ‘Derthona’ is not your typical light and refreshing Italian white wine, it macerates on the skins for approximately 60 hours resulting in a more opulent, structured style. Aromas of orange peel, dried flowers, chamomile, and honey lead to a creamy palate that begs to be enjoyed with richer foods.
