Region: Alto Piedmont, Piedmont, Italy Grape(s): Barbera Winemaker: Francis Vallana & Marina Fogarty Drinks Best: Now - 3 Years
This family winery, with roots dating back to the 18th century, is located in the town of Maggiora in the Alto Piedmont, an area in northwest Italy north of the esteemed hills of Barolo and Barbaresco. Back then, Bernardo Vallana crafted wine that garnered international attention as some of the most esteemed wines from Piedmont - and Italy overall. Over time, Barolo and Barbaresco have taken much of the international spotlight away from the Alto Piedmont, however, the wines of Vallana are no less impressive, yet now represent phenomenal value. Their humble Barbera features notes of black cherries with just a kiss of damp earth making this a versatile match for varied cuisines.
Pairings: Insalata di carne cruda - minced raw beef or veal with lemon juice, Evoo, & garlic
