Appellation: Maule Valley Grape(s): 80% Pais, 20% Carignan Winemaker: David Marcel & Loreta Garau Drinks Best: Now
Husband-wife duo David Marcel and Loreta Garau are at the forefront of a new generation of Chilean winemakers who are taking a minimal approach to making wine, allowing the terroir of Chile to shine through. ‘Pipeño’ wine historically are the jugs of table wine drank by farmers and made with País grapes, which unfortaunely have declined in popularity and have generally been relegated to bulk juice. However, Marcel and Garau make this wine with the same care and finesse as their others at Vina Maitia, changing the perception of this notable grape. Best served chilled, Pipeño is simply drinkable, busting with juicy strawberry and raspberry flavors, a hint of spice, and fresh acidity.
