Rioja is a historic growing area in northern Spain that follows the Ebro River, south of the Pyrenees. It’s known for producing some of the country’s absolute best wines, but it’s large enough to also yield delicious, everyday wines that offer great value. Lomas del Marques’s 100% Tempranillo is a great example of the fruit-forward style that is versatile enough to enjoy on its own or to pair with a huge range of foods. This unoaked red is medium-bodied with velvety tannins and a juicy palate. Aromas and flavors revolve around sweet red cherry, strawberry, and brambly wild berries. The finish is nice and long, introducing dried leaves, leather, and stewed fruit. It walks a pleasant line between traditional and modern expressions of Rioja.
