Wines from the Giacomo Conterno estate in Monforte d’Alba are among the most coveted from all of Italy. The Nebbiolo-based Barolos, naturally, command the majority of the spotlight, but the Barbera is no slouch. The defining character of every wine that emerges from this storied estate is the attention to detail at all phases in the vineyard and cellar work. Winemaking is traditional, yet very precise. The Barbera is rich and structured, with complexity that can put many similarly priced Barolos to shame. This bottling shows dark cherry, plum, licorice, and dried herbs, yet remains remarkably vibrant thanks to Barbera’s high acidity.
