'The Many Faces of Grenache'

Grenache is not a household name for a few reasons. It is a grape that is often not mentioned on the label. Used as a blending grape, it is the G in GSM--S being Syrah and M Mourvedre--the famous blend of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and other Rhone reds. It also goes by different names in different countries: in Sardinia it is Cannonau; in Spain, Garnacha. Whatever you call it, this grape thrives in warm Mediterranean climates, is late-ripening, and tends to produce wines with high alcohol content. Garnachas are bold, ripe and spicy. Grenaches taste of stewed strawberries with lavender and thyme.Cannonaus tend to be lighter-bodied with floral and herbal notes. In blends, it can add elegance and depth to darker, heavier varietals.
