During the 1980s, Bulgaria emerged as a leading wine producer worldwide, yet distribution was largely confined to Eastern Europe due to a state-controlled socialist wine monopoly, which allocated 90% of its output to the Soviet Union. With the collapse of the socialist regime in 1989, wineries transitioned back to private ownership, ushering in a revival of small-scale wine production. Located in the Thracian Valley at Bulgaria's southernmost border with Greece and Turkey, Ross-Idi presents its single vineyard Gewürztraminer, boasting enticing notes of dried florals and herbs, complemented by a palate of bruised apple, pear, and peach skins, delicately accented by a whisper of residual sugar.
