Region: McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia Vineyard: McMurtrie Rd. Grape(s): Garnacha Winemaker: Steve Pannell Drinks Best: Now - 3 Years
Stephen Pannell was destined to become a winemaker. His parents established the Moss Wood Vineyard in Margaret River, Australia in the late 1960s and were pioneers of grape gorwing in the region at the time. Following in his family’s footsteps, Steve has helped make wine all over the world in regions like Barolo, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and of course Australia where he spend a decade working as chief winemaker at Hardy’s. ‘Basso,’ which means ‘low,’ is named for the minimal intervention approach Steve takes in the cellar as well as his judicious use of sulfur additions. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, red apple skin, and baking spices introduce a juicy, medium-bodied palate with popping mixed berry fruit and black tea tannins.
