The Bugey winemaking region is one of France’s hidden gems. The vineyards are hard to detect, nestled amongst extremely mountainous terrain and steep, winding Alpine roads. Only 420 acres are under vine with an eclectic mix of French varietals cultivated to produce both still and sparkling wines. Maison Angelot has about 70 acres under vine and is producing some delicious, food-friendly wines that meant to be enjoyed. Their Mondeuse, an ancient red grape native to eastern France, has a deep ruby color and aromas of black cherry, licorice, and pepper. Bright acidity and smooth tannins make this an extremely versatile red to pair with a variety of dishes.
