Region: Juliénas, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France Grape(s): Gamay Winemaker: Valentin Montanet Drinks Best: Now - 4 Years
Though located in northern Burgundy, Valentin Montanet of La Soeur Cadette began sourcing Beaujolais fruit in 2016 after severe weather destroyed 80% of his crop. Originally interested in Chardonnay, he has begun sourcing Gamay from villages to make cru Beaujolais. After three years into his Beaujolais venture, it’s hard to tell he hasn’t been producing Beaujolais his whole life. These are refreshing, mineral-driven wines that are wild enough to satisfy natural wine fans yet clean and balanced enough to please even the most traditional palate. This is textbook Juliénas, showing a bit of structure, dense blueberry and cherry fruit, gorgeous floral notes of violets and earthy spices.
