La Maialina, named for Tuscany’s only surviving heirloom breed of pig, creates a stunning lineup of wines from the rolling hills of the same historic and rustic region. Keeping their original Chianti a single expression of the native Sangiovese grape, it shows a true example of terroir in a simple, well-made wine. There’s also no oak, allowing for the ripe cherry aromas and flavors of the grape to take center stage. Strawberry and red fruit flesh out an easy-drinking, smooth palate that finishes with warming spice notes. A touch of soft tannin completes this wine and reminds us of its pastoral Tuscan roots.
