Though Júlio Bastos’ family has heled the Quinta do Carmo estate for generations, it was not until the 1980s that he restored the winery and brought to international acclaim. In expanding and modernizing he still preserved the original marble troughs or ‘lagares’ for foot treading that they still use today. Among his vineyards are prized old clones of Alicante Bouschet, which comprises the heart of this blend. The is deep and rich red wine dripping with plum and black cherry fruit with hints of cocoa and coffee from the well-integrated oak aging.
