Region: Priorat, Catalonia, Spain Grape(s): Samsó Drinks Best: Now - 5 Years
The stark, irregular slate slopes of Priorat, known as ‘costers,’ plus the decomposed slate topsoil Llicorella, which has very poor water retention, make for a difficult journey for these vines. The low-yielding Samsó vines that grow in this harsh but beautiful environment produce highly concentrated fruit, allowing the richness and pure slatey minerality to come through in the wine. ‘Clos Cypres’ is strutured with bold tannins, but also retains freshness. Aged for twelve months in French oak, flavors of vanilla and leather come through to meet blackberry, balsamic, vegetal garrigue, licorice, fierce minerality, and lively acidity to create an exceptionally well-balanced wine. Decant before drinking.
