Few estates in all of Burgundy are held in higher esteem than Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, where for half a century, Jacques d’Angerville pioneered (along with his contemporaries Armand Rousseau & Henri Gouges) vineyard and winery practices that we understand today as being essential for an exceptional, terroir-focused wine. When the Jacques passed away in 2003, his son Guillaume assumed the reigns of the storied estate, which continues to produce definitive wines of Volnay and some of the most exquisite wines with Burgundian grapes, anywhere in the world. These are essential wines for serious fans of Pinot Noir, with the family holdings in the Champans vineyard and their monopole Clos des Ducs, in particular, being wines that regularly surpass many Grand Cru from lesser producers. The discussion of greatest domaines in Burgundy is subjective, and is a favored after-dinner conversation among Francophile wine drinkers, but any such list or discussion simply must include d’Angerville.
