Region: Southern Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand Grape(s): Pinot Noir Winemaker: Paul Bourgeois Drinks Best: Now - 3 Years
In the early 90s, Bryan and Jan Johnson bought a parcel of land in the southern reaches of Marlborough considered far too rugged and dry for wine grapes. The only notable features were the two large satellite dishes ensconced in Kevlar domes that are a part of an international intelligence gathering program. The ‘Spy Balls’ as they are locally known, soon gave them the theme and name of their winery. Their handpicked single estate Pinot Noir is aged in French barrels providing subtle aromas ofof cocoa powder and baking spices. The palate features candied cherry fruit, dried flower petals, and a supple but firm tannin structure.
Pairings: Rosemary lamb kebabs with smoky eggplant
