The Beira Interior is a lesser known region on the Eastern border of Portugal & Spain, away from the coastline. However, it’s where winemaker Rui Madeira calls home and claims as one of the best region’s for Portugal’s native red varieties. Rugged terrain and a higher altitude allow the grapes to thrive, resulting in ripeness, but complexity, as exemplified by the Beyra Tinto. Kept for a year in stainless steel, the black raspberry fruit comes through immediately on the nose and palate. A backbone of gritty minerality gives the wine structure against its dark, ripe fruit and spicy finish. Made up of primarily Tinta Roriz, otherwise known as Tempranillo in Spain, it’s familiar but re-energized!
